5 Common Tile Installation Mistakes (And How We Avoid Them)
When it comes to tile installations, especially in wet areas like showers, the details behind the scenes are just as crucial as the tiles you see. At Artisan Tile, we’ve encountered and rectified numerous issues stemming from common installation mistakes. Here’s a breakdown of five frequent errors and how we ensure they’re avoided in our projects.
1. Inadequate Subfloor Support
A sturdy foundation is essential. An unstable or defective subfloor can lead to movement in the shower system, causing cracks or leaks over time. We always ensure the subfloor is free of defects and complies with the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) standards before proceeding.
2. Confusing Water-Resistant with Waterproof Materials
Not all boards are created equal. While water-resistant boards can handle some moisture, they’re not impervious. For areas exposed to constant water and steam, like showers, we use waterproof wallboards that prevent moisture intrusion, safeguarding against mold and structural damage.
3. Neglecting Proper Floor Slope and Weep Hole Protection
Water needs a clear path to drain. Without a correctly sloped floor, water can pool, leading to potential damage. Additionally, weep holes, which allow water to escape beneath the tile, must remain unobstructed. We ensure the floor is appropriately sloped and protect weep holes from debris during installation.
4. Skipping the Waterproofing Membrane
A waterproofing membrane acts as a barrier, preventing water from seeping into the underlying structure. Omitting this step can lead to significant issues down the line. We always apply a high-quality waterproofing membrane, following manufacturer guidelines to the letter.
5. Using the Wrong Materials for the Job
Selecting the right materials is paramount. For instance, using standard drywall in a shower area is a recipe for disaster. We choose materials specifically designed for wet environments, ensuring longevity and durability.
